Shadowing
How can I get more out of shadowing?
Pick episodes slightly above your level, work in short segments, slow the speed at first, repeat hard sentences and practise a little every day.

Shadowing works best with a little structure. These tips will help you get more from each session.
Choose the right episode
- Pick a show you genuinely enjoy. You’ll practise more often.
- Aim for speech you understand most of, but not all of.
- Conversations and interviews often sound more natural to copy than read-aloud scripts.
A simple routine
- Listen first to a short part without speaking, and look up any words you don’t know.
- Segment, 1 sentence: repeat each sentence after the pause. Use repeat on tricky ones.
- Slow it down if you can’t keep up, then return to normal speed.
- Sync: speak along with the same part without stopping.
What to focus on
- Copy the rhythm and stress, not just the words.
- Notice how words link together and which ones are said quickly.
- Speak out loud at a normal volume. Whispering doesn’t train your mouth the same way.
Keep it regular
Ten minutes a day beats an hour once a week. Podling’s default daily goal already includes 10 minutes of shadowing; see How do daily goals work?
Plus and Pro add 2- and 3-sentence segments for longer practice. Read more on the Shadowing page.
