Shadowing
What’s the difference between Sync and Segment shadowing?
Sync lets you speak along with the audio as it plays. Segment plays 1, 2 or 3 sentences, then pauses so you can repeat them.

Podling has two shadowing modes. Both use the live transcript, so you always see what the speaker is saying.
Sync mode
In Sync, you speak along with the audio as it plays, without stopping. It’s great for practising rhythm, linking and intonation, and it feels like singing along with a song.
Try Sync when the episode is at a comfortable level, or slow the speed down a little.
Segment mode
In Segment, Podling plays a short piece, then pauses so you can repeat it. You choose the length:
- 1 sentence: best for starting out or for difficult sentences.
- 2 sentences: a bigger chunk that trains memory as well as pronunciation.
- 3 sentences: a challenge for longer stretches of natural speech.
Plan limits
- Free: Sync and 1-sentence segments.
- Plus and Pro: 2- and 3-sentence segments as well.
Which should I use?
- Start with Segment, 1 sentence to get each sentence right.
- Move to longer segments as you get comfortable.
- Finish with Sync on the same part to put it all together.
In both modes you can change the speed, repeat a sentence and go to the previous or next sentence. Pronunciation scoring is planned for Pro and isn’t available yet.
